Sat, 14 Aug 2010 04:53:34 -0700 I'd take two beers and jump, but I don't think this plane is big enough for an emergency slide http://rtboats.posterous.com/id-take-two-beers-and-jump-but-i-dont-think-t http://rtboats.posterous.com/id-take-two-beers-and-jump-but-i-dont-think-t No joke, this plane has little twin propellers. 4 seats a row. I am sitting by what I suspect is the failure of abstinence-only education-- a true, hearty teen mom, still awkward in her wranglers and barn boots. If I make it to Seattle, that will be fantastic. PS, I swear i just saw teen mom shake her baby. (To wake it to feed for the altitude chang at takeoff)

Sun, 08 Aug 2010 15:27:00 -0700 My goodness! http://rtboats.posterous.com/my-goodness http://rtboats.posterous.com/my-goodness Waiting for plane. Just saw two dirty-roots blond dowmarket (fast fashion sunglasses from the back of US weekly) girls walking-- shortish shorts just short enough to see matching tatoos across back of their ever-so-slightly cottage cheese thighs. In tatoo script, left: Always; right: Forever {tatoo sketch of red lipstick kiss print}. I'm not brave enough to try to get a picture. But I'm thinking-- how much would my dad kill me if he found out I got a tatoo like that?

I'm thinking--

Sun, 08 Aug 2010 11:52:29 -0700 Zion Rangers http://rtboats.posterous.com/zion-rangers http://rtboats.posterous.com/zion-rangers Zion was fantastic. Again, google it, bc I didn't take my phone with me. Lots of french ppl again. We rode the park shuttle up and down the canyon, stopping to do a few 30 min half mile "hikes."

I definitely want to come back to Zion to do the Narrows-- it's an intense hike where you basically wade through the river winding through the slot canyons.

I saw this ADORABLE mixed family-- hot Indian dad, pretty white mom-- with three insanely cute kids. The middle one, a girl, was like my alter ego at 6. Loud, curious, long curly hair. She was clearly the boss. I have never wanted to kidnap a child more. We were waiting for the shuttle, and she put out her hand in that hilarious way when kids are being adult and serious, and said, Everbody, hush! She closed her eyes, listened, and announced, The bus is COMING. Then her toddler little brother who had given me the stink eye earlier (sixth sense for stranger danger?) turned around wildly, like, OMG WHERE? It was one of those precious moments where you realize little kids will be excited and wondrous about anything.

Actually, I'd just kidnap the two little ones, because the older brother was already 8 or so, and boring and had glasses.

Zion is essentially this enormous canyon with cliffs rising up on both sides for miles. The cliffs have epic LDS-given names like The Patriarchs, Moroni, Angel's Landing, and God's Throne. Angel's Landing has a portion where you have to go hand over hand clinging to a chain bolted into the cliff. I want to do that one too.

On the shuttle back down the canyon, this adorable earnest park ranger sat next to me. She said she didn't grow up doing outdoors stuff, and in her lugged boots, dorky hat and Indigo Girls hair cut, she had all the zealousness of a convert. I pitched her my idea for a scripted ensemble drama: ZION. Or maybe, Rangers of Zion. Or, Zion Rangers. It would be like Grey's Anatomy, but with park rangers. Like, Grey's meets Yogi Bear. You can still have all the same sex and relationship drama, earnest newbies getting into it with senior staff. There would be B story lines with stranded tourists, landslides, hippies growing pot in the back country, etc. Also, you could have arcs involving budget cuts and political lobbying-- maybe the park director goes to DC, pulls a stunt with bringing wild animal-- wild cat or falcon-- onto the House floor. And, you could also have a storyline with a developer trying to buy parkland from the government to build disneyfied park resort condos, and like, the developer's lawyer has a secret affair with the park director. The sweet park ranger said it was the best idea she heard all summer. Anyway, if anyone wants to write this, let me know.

Off to Billings today. I'm all about the red states with blue people. *via smartphone*

Drove out yesterday with my bff and her bf, stayed in a lovely motel. We took our last showers for the next 4 days, came into the park set up camp this AM. Didn't take the device with me down into the Bryce Ampitheater, but google it and be jealous. So far, Bryce is amazing. The hoodoos (spindly, red rock columns, worn bown by eons of weather and geology) are lined up in the bottom of the canyon like rocky soldiers, waiting for an epic voice out of the blue sky, waiting to do Jesus's/Joseph Smith's bidding. (This is UT, after all). There are tons of French, German and Quebecois tourists that I've noticed. Lots of Americans. Everyone taking pictures. Tomorrow, we're hiking 5 miles into the back country to go camping out in a meadow. *via smartphone*

Mon, 21 Jun 2010 13:11:04 -0700 Vienna: Hanging Out http://rtboats.posterous.com/vienna-hanging-out http://rtboats.posterous.com/vienna-hanging-out Still catching up on posts. More to come!

We went to Vienna to attend BF's cousin's wedding, and as a side perk, I enjoyed four parties in four days: Coffees, cakes, white wines, proscuitto, sausages, dumplings, shnitzels, and stunningly good company.

We basically did a lot of hanging out. Except, I don't think one would call it “hanging out.” More like “spending time with family and friends.” (When you say this, you should drink a “weiner mélange” and have your pinky raised, delicately, up.)

I met so many cool/nice/international/interesting people. The BF's family was united en masse for the first time in quite a while, and it was nice to see them all catch up with each other. The family-in-law are very genteel, very close and speak very good, lusciously-accented English. The women all chain-smoke thin cigarettes, have perfect hair and wear thick gold bracelets. The bride's father-in-law was like my dream of an elegant European man. He speaks several languages, has his initials monogrammed below the breast pocket of all his shirts, has a cathode-tube jukebox, and wears glasses without earpieces, perched on his nose. He's almost slightly more of a nice person than the BF. His daughter (bride's sister in-law) told me he takes all his business meetings in the very charming, very Viennese and ancient café across from his office. He has a running tab there.

One of the most surprising and delightful things of the weekend was getting to spend so much time with the bride and groom. They were very calm, and were so happy so many of their friends and family had come from around the globe to celebrate with them. They even had a family dinner (an Official Introducing of the Two Families) at their apartment two days before the wedding. BF's cousin is sweet and graceful, and her now-husband is incredibly generous, chill and has excellent hair. He picked all BF's family up from the airport (four different arrivals!) and even took us out for drinks two days after their wedding, and just hours before a dawn flight to their honeymoon in Morocco. (BF's family is pretty much obsessed with the new husband, and I like him, very much, too. AND he took us, by chance, to two different Jewish-run restaurants, and he could pass for Israeli. My bubbe would have approved, and my mom definitely will.)

  1. Can we kick it (in Vienna)? Yes, we can.
  2. Jukebox!
  3. Fathers of the groom (left) and bride (right)
  4. Not yet married
  5. Siblings
  6. Enjoying ice cream
  7. REALLY enjoying ice cream
  8. At Kaffee Alt Vien

Wed, 16 Jun 2010 01:08:04 -0700 Guest Post #3 http://rtboats.posterous.com/guest-post-3 http://rtboats.posterous.com/guest-post-3 We are currently sitting at a cafe in the Zagreb center. We woke up at 4am to catch the early bus and Rach-dawg is a bit tired. She just had a cappuccino (I am waiting for it to kick in) and we'll feed her soon.

I am being directed to include a general summary of the trip. I think the subject deserves its own thoughtful post so I will give you a, what we call in the "business," tease.

The post-Vienna week included a sea organ (Chelsea and Amy, include your own dirty joke, this is a parent-safe blog), amazing lakes in Plitvice, lots of calamari, dragons and Rachel's new favorite place. And more!

Until then, stay classy San Diego.
